What is CHEMEX?

In 1941, excentric chemist Dr Peter Schlumbohm invented the first CHEMEX coffee maker. Schlumbohm was something of genius who gained more than 300 patents in his lifetime for diverse products. He always focussed on designing functional objects that were also both stylish and easy to use.

When designing the first CHEMEX coffee maker, Schlumbohm wanted to guarantee the perfect brew but was also keen to deliver a thing of beauty. His expertise in chemistry ensured that he understood the science behind the extraction of flavour. Indeed, the CHEMEX coffee maker is based on glass laboratory equipment. The coffee maker is now found in many museums and was selected by the Illinois Institute of Technology as one of the 100 best designed products of modern times.
