My machine isn't listed — how do I measure it myself? ▾
Tamper size is set by the inside diameter of your filter basket, not the outside of the portafilter. Here's the reliable way:
- Take the basket out and measure the internal diameter at the top rim with calipers — a ruler isn't accurate enough, 1 mm matters.
- Your ideal tamper is roughly 0.3–0.5 mm smaller than that, so it drops in cleanly without scraping or vacuum-locking.
- Most baskets are one of four sizes: 49, 51, 54 mm (Sage/Breville) or 58 mm (E61 / commercial). A few outliers are 53, 55 or 57 mm.
