A common feature of menus in the US, even those in chain restaurants, the Espresso Martini is a coffee lover’s dream.

You may not have experienced this delicious and indulgent drink. Most unfortunately, it is not included on all cocktail menus in the UK which tend to showcase fruity blends, champagne cocktails and traditional American martinis.

What is the history of the Espresso Martini?

The Espresso Martini is thought to have been invented in the 1980s by British bartender Dick Bradsell. He is something of a legend in hospitality and is credited with revolutionizing the London cocktail scene during the 1980s. He worked at bars such as The Player, 6 Degrees and Match. Bradsell created several modern classics including the Bramble.

It is said that the Espresso martini was born when a young model (now famous) asked Bradsell to mix a drink “to wake me up and then mess me up,” inspiring Bradsell to blend vodka, coffee liqueur, and freshly brewed espresso. The result? A cocktail that wakes you up while delivering a smooth, satisfying buzz.

What are the ingredients?

A traditional Espresso Martini requires just a few key ingredients:

Vodka – the spirit base

Coffee Liqueur – such as Kahlúa or Tia Maria, for sweetness and depth

Espresso – preferably hot and freshly brewed

Simple syrup (sugar syrup) – optional, for added sweetness

How do you make an espresso martini?

  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine 50ml vodka, 25ml coffee liqueur, 25ml espresso, and 10ml simple syrup.
