What is a knock box?

A coffee knock box is also known as a bash bin. It is a receptacle featuring a bar on which to 'knock' a portafilter to remove used grounds. Also storing spent espresso grounds (pucks), a knock box enables you to maintain a tidy working area while keeping grounds ready for disposal. Barista knock boxes are usually positioned adjacent to an espresso machine to enable the barista to produce the next espresso without the need to move around the room.

What type of knock box should you consider?

You will find that coffee grounds knock boxes can offer a variety of features including angled tops, non-slip bases and removable bars. Some models are free-standing while others are designed to be recessed into a counter, above a bin. You will also discover table-top knock box drawers as well as under counter knock out drawers.
